Families4Change, Inc. is pleased to provide an effective and enjoyable multiple family group experience through the Family Solutions Program (FSP). FSPs 10 week cycles are taking place almost daily throughout the country and are having a positive impact on children’s academic success, family cohesion, and parent effectiveness. Below are a few examples of the exciting moments where FSP has made a difference in the lives of families and the skilled facilitators who have made a commitment to provide such beneficial FSP experience for families in their communities.
Families are building community…
- “’It is very nice to know that I am not the only parent having an issue, other parents share the same issue as I am having in my family’ (parent from FSP). Families are beginning to work together as a group to attempt to address their own issues. For example, family members are more willing to assist other families with issues or concerns, and transportation to and from the sessions.” –Richland County SC DJJ FSP group
- “Success: The families have bonded!” –Spartanburg SC School District FSP group
Families are learning together…
- “The homework that was due this week was called ‘Car Time.’ Families expressed how difficult but enlightening this activity was for them. Families shared that getting their child to ‘turn-off’ the phone or remove the headphones at first was a challenge, but how so much can be accomplished and learned about their young person while they are in the car when they ‘turn-off’ the radio, the smart phones, and just communicate to each other.” – Richland County SC DJJ FSP group
- “Because our families all have Spanish speaking parents, they all shared how language is a barrier for them to help their child with homework. George Dawson’s story (Session 6- Education) inspired and motivated them to be more creative and to not give in so quickly.” –Greenville County Schools SC FSP group
Families are overcoming obstacles…
- “The one challenge we previously had as leaders was that we had one parent that spoke very little English. Her son would translate for her during class so that she could follow along. After visiting the Families4Change website (families4change.org), we were able to print out a packet in Spanish to accommodate the parent.” –Horry County Schools-Myrtle Beach, SC FSP group
- “We began our session by asking open-ended questions regarding anger and anger control. The families were open about discussing ways they handle anger. We have one father that really does well with sharing his story with our teen boys. He shared how his anger led him to years in prison as an adult and the consequences of enduring that time in his life. We have another family with a mother and son that have a troubled relationship. When the teen began to express his anger about a specific situation, we were able to have an open discussion about this. The youth discussed how they are learning to walk away from situations and people who make them angry.” –Lexington SC DJJ FSP group
