Families4Change in Schools
The Family Solutions Program (FSP) can be an excellent intervention in schools for youth with behavior problems, chronic truancy or absences and for youth at-risk for expulsion and their families. While FSP began with juvenile first-offenders, school-based programs can reach families early so that students can avoid contact with the juvenile justice system and they can remain in school to secure positive futures. Family functioning and parent involvement are keys to student success.
In schools, FSP brings families together for 10 sessions to address:
• Family cooperation and communication
• The importance of education, school attendance, and strengthening the family-school
partnership
• Effective parenting skills including parental monitoring and supervision
• How to successfully manage peer pressure and make good decisions that result in
beneficial consequences
• How to manage anger and conflicts in acceptable ways and,
• The value of community service.
Families and Schools Connected Program
Families and Schools Connected is a three session program for youth and their parents designed to strengthen family-school partnerships. The three weekly sessions target those challenges that face youth and families within the school setting. FSC emphasizes the positive effects of high parental involvement on children’s educational success, the importance of regular school attendance, parent-teacher communication, procedures for completing homework, and creating a home environment for learning.
